Aspendos Ancient City
Located at the 2nd kilometre of the road turning north from the 44th kilometre of Antalya - Alanya highway, Aspendos is famous for having the best preserved Roman period theatre not only in Anatolia but also in the whole Mediterranean world. The city was founded on the hill plain near Köprüçay (Ancient Eurymedon), one of the largest rivers of the region. Aspendos, which owes its access to the Mediterranean and its development to the nearby river and thus to the fertile lands around it, is mostly visited today for its theatre and waterways. The ruins of other buildings belonging to the city are located on the plain of the hill where the theatre rests.
Historians mention that the Greek side won the battle between the Greeks and Persians in 467 BC, known as the Battle of Eurymedon, on the edge of the river flowing near the city. Although Aspendos tried to resist Alexander the Great by fraudulent means, they eventually surrendered and accepted the tax debt in return for the famous horses and gold raised in the city. After Alexander's death, the city came under the rule of Ptolemies, and its most brilliant period was undoubtedly the Roman Empire period, when the famous theatre and waterways were built.
